Sandy Springs Wildlife Education: Does Rope Work As A Snake Repellent?
If you are concerned about snakes on your property or coming to close to your campsite while camping, then you will probably have done some research about repellents. A common suggestion is to place a bit of rope by the area you don’t want the snake to go. Unfortunately, this is not typically an effective method.
The Theory
The idea behind using rope as a snake repellent is that snakes don’t want to travel over scratchy materials when it isn’t necessary. Therefore, if you just lay a rope out, the snake will avoid crawling over it and stay out of the area you have sectioned off, whether that is your home or a campsite.
What Really Happens
Before trusting the rope repellent method, you need to consider where and how snakes live. These animals live in the wild around the world and in all types of terrains. Clearly they are used to crawling over a range of materials, even scratchy ones. This means that they will simply travel over the rope like they would any other object. There is, of course, a chance that the rope will deter some smaller snakes or the occasional reptile, but it won’t work reliably.
What About Other Repellents?
So if rope doesn’t work as a snake repellent, you may be wondering what does. There are numerous home remedies as well as store bought solutions containing chemicals that theoretically keep snakes away. You will also find vibrating noise machines that claim to keep these animals away. Unfortunately, none of these methods will work reliably either; they will just waste your money.
What Does Work
Although most commercial and homemade repellents aren’t effective at deterring snakes, there are some things you can do. If you have snakes on your property, the easiest solution is to hire a professional to remove them for you. You may also notice some positive results by getting animals that snakes are afraid of since they prey on them. Unfortunately, this is not an option for most homeowners since the average household pet won’t scare snakes without training. Some animals that do keep them away include mongooses, eagles, and honey badgers. If you live in an area where these animals naturally occur, you can encourage them to stay by your property, but they may bring their own issues.
The ideal method of preventing snakes is to seal up your home so there are no entry points or methods of getting inside. If there are already snakes, then snake traps can let you catch and relocate them successfully and humanely.
